Do I Have to be Catholic?

  • No. Although the weekend is presented by the Catholic Church, couples of all faith expressions are encouraged to take part as they prepare for marriage. The opportunities of the weekend go well beyond the boundaries of any one faith.

Does Engaged Encounter Satisfy the Catholic Church's Requirement for Marriage Preparation?

  • Within the Archdiocese of Atlanta, Engaged Encounter is endorsed as fulfilling this requirement. Your priest always has the final say on what he will accept for your marriage preparation. Please check with the priest who will officiate your wedding before registering. At the conclusion of the weekend, you will receive a certificate to give to your priest verifying your participation.

When Should We Attend an Engaged Encounter Weekend?

  • Couples are encouraged to attend a weekend 6 months before their wedding date to obtain maximum benefit.

What if We Are Civilly Married?

  • After you meet with your priest and he schedules your wedding, you are welcome on the weekend as you prepare for your sacramental marriage within the Church.

Do We Have to Speak In Front of the Group?

  • No. You may be asked to introduce yourself and your fiancé . There will be a few group discussion periods and group activities; participation is voluntary. The weekend is designed for the two of you to have quality time for private discussions. It is not counseling or group therapy, and your privacy will be respected at all times.

What is the difference between the two-day format, the three-day format and the virtual retreat weekends?

  • Two-day format: Explore with your fiancé the joys, blessings and challenges of the marriage sacrament.  You will find guided discussions, active listening, lots of laughter, and the articulation of the values that sustain unions for a lifetime.
  • Three-day format: All the same content of the two-day format, plus surroundings that are more contemplative, providing a fuller retreat experience. You will find time for deeper dialogue with your fiancé, with other couples and with participating clergy.
  • Due to the COVID 19 pandemic Atlanta CEE is offering virtual CEE retreats. The format and content of the retreat weekend remains the same as the 2 day format. The only change is that we are delivering our message virtually rather than in person.

What does a weekend cost?

  • Weekend cost information is available on our registration page; Cost is per couple.
  • Financial assistance is available. If you need assistance, please have your priest contact our Local Coordinators at to begin the process. No couple will be turned away because of lack of funds
