The retreat weekend creates an atmosphere for the two of you to concentrate exclusively on each other, free of the distractions, pressures, and daily interruptions of life - a "time out" away from home, friends, and wedding preparations.

It is a quiet weekend, specifically designed to give you the opportunity to talk honestly about your future together - an opportunity to discover a deeper appreciation of your relationship and God's call to unite in a permanent union, the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Presenting teams usually consist of two married couples and a priest who give a series of presentations about issues such as Communication, Intimacy, Values, and Sacramental Marriage. After each presentation, you'll be given a series of questions to complete individually. You'll then have time to share your thoughts and written answers quietly with one another.

With the exception of meals and a few group activities, personal reflection and dialogue are the main emphasis of the weekend.

Most people spend many months and thousands of dollars preparing for their wedding. The question we ask is, "Are you willing to spend one weekend devoted to exploring ideas and learning tools that will help to make your marriage the best it can be for the next 50 years or more?"

What should we bring to the weekend?

  • Comfortable casual clothing. While you are welcome to do so, there is no need to change for dinner or Mass. The Monastery requests modest clothing for Mass (e.g., no shorts).

  • Toiletries, medicines and other personal items

  • Any snack or refillable water bottle for your own personal consumption and snacks or beverages to share with the group.

What time should we arrive and when does the weekend conclude?

  • This is different for each weekend.

    • For all weekends at local parishes, please arrive between 7:00 - 7:30 AM on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. Both days conclude at approximately 6:00 - 6:30 PM.

    • The Monastery of the Holy Spirit weekends are 3 day weekends beginning Friday evening. Please arrive by 7:30 PM. Friday. The Monastery gates are locked at 8 PM. The weekend concludes on Sunday at about 4 PM.

    • Because we are on a tight schedule, we cannot wait for couples who arrive late. If there is an emergency, please see the information listed below

Do we have to stay for the entire weekend?

  • Yes. If you arrive late or leave early, you will miss important parts of the weekend experience, and we will not be able to give you your weekend certificate and letter verifying your attendance.

What about meals?

  • On parish-based weekends, only lunch will be served on both Saturday and Sunday.

  • On Monastery weekends, dinner will NOT be served on Friday. On Saturday, three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be served. On Sunday, two meals (breakfast and lunch) will be served.

  • We will do our best to accommodate special dietary needs, but our choices are limited. If you are a vegetarian, please indicate this on your registration form in the special needs/comments box.

Will I have a roommate at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit?

  • Yes, you will have a roommate of the same sex as yourself if you have registered for a double room at the Monastery. A limited number of single rooms are available at an additional cost. All bathrooms are shared for both double and single rooms. While we recognize that couples may already be living together, you will not be permitted to share a room with your fiance while on the weekend.

Will we have much free time this weekend?

  • No. The weekend is designed to be intense so that you can spend as much concentrated time together as possible preparing for your marriage. You may find that we stay up later or get up earlier than you typically would on a weekend. We recommend you get plenty of rest the night before the weekend.

Catholic Engaged Encounter is an international nonprofit ministry dedicated to marriage preparation that has been successfully preparing thousands of couples each year for sacramental marriage since 1968.

We are a community of volunteer couples and clergy whose ministry is dedicated to outstanding marriage preparation. We present weekend retreats to serve the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Although we are not professionals, we follow guidelines and presentation outlines developed by our national organization.

Each weekend retreat is focused on preparing engaged couples for a sacramental marriage by providing a life-giving view of marriage and challenging them to communicate openly and honestly with each other. Attendees are couples of all faiths - usually planning to marry in the Catholic Church. The retreat weekend is presented by a team of two married couples and a priest over two or three days. Through a series of personal writings and privately shared exercises, the two of you will be challenged to explore many aspects of your relationship, your spiritual life, and your expectations of marriage in a deeper, more profound way.

The National Organization of Catholic Engaged Encounter strives to be a truly international family. We have an established structure, which sustains local communities in this country and around the world. The United States national family consists of an Executive Team (a couple and a priest) who directs the activities of the United States National Board. This Board consists of teams that represent five geographical regions in the US: Northeast, Midwest, South, North Central, and West.
